FOODSAFE Level 1

A food handling, sanitation and work safety course designed for food service establishment operators and front line food service workers such as cooks, servers, bussers, dishwashers, and deli workers. The course covers important food safety and worker safety information including foodborne illness, receiving and storing food, preparing food, serving food, cleaning and sanitizing.

What to expect from FOODSAFE Level 1

Take Level 1 in a classroom

FOODSAFE Level 1 is offered as a one-day (7-8 hour) course in classrooms around the province, hosted by colleges, universities, community centres, and private training companies. The course fee varies depending on course provider.

Individuals are provided with an English workbook on the day of class. If you require a workbook or bilingual exam in one of the other languages supported by FOODSAFE, you must make arrangements with your course provider ahead of time. Additional fees may apply for other language workbooks (i.e., difference in cost of workbook and shipping charges, if applicable).

Take Level 1 Online

The FOODSAFE Level 1 online course uses Open School BC's state-of-the-art learning management system and hosting service. This course delivers content in an organized and methodical, step-by-step instructional process that promotes a learner-centered approach to safety awareness.

Duration: You can take anywhere from one to twenty days to complete the online course and write the final exam. You can complete the course in one day if you can book an invigilator (exam supervisor) to meet with you at the end of the day, but it is recommended that you take the time to read the course materials and complete the practice quizzes.

The final exam for the online course is available in English only.

Take Level 1 via Distance Education

The FOODSAFE Correspondence course is offered by go2HR, and is designed to lead students through FOODSAFE Level 1 at their own pace. It may be more convenient than taking the regular 8-hour classroom course and allows small business operators to provide staff training outside of regular business hours.

Duration: You can take anywhere from two weeks to six months to complete the correspondence course. Certification is possible within two weeks of registering. The course must be completed within six months of registration.

Fee: $95 + $18 shipping and handling (includes workbook, USB with video resource, exam and certificate) + GST. Companies registering more than one employee should contact go2HR for the workbook only option ($80.00) as well as combined shipping and handling costs.

Exams are available in Arabic, Chinese, English, Farsi, French, Japanese, Korean, Punjabi, Spanish, and Tagalog.
